Phonics

At St George’s, phonics is taught daily to give children a strong foundation in early reading and spelling. We teach phonics for 30 minutes each day, following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.

In Reception, children begin with shorter sessions that quickly build to the full lesson length, supported by daily oral blending and word-reading games. Teaching starts in Week 1 of the Autumn term, ensuring children make a strong and confident start. Weekly review sessions help to consolidate learning and build fluency.

We follow the Little Wandle expectations for progression:

  • Reception pupils learn to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) accurately and fluently.

  • Year 1 pupils review Phases 3 and 4 and are taught Phase 5 GPCs, developing increasing accuracy and automaticity in reading and spelling.

Our structured and consistent approach ensures children develop secure decoding skills, preparing them to transition confidently into independent reading.
