Our broad and balanced curriculum at St George’s Catholic Primary School places a high importance on English, Maths, RE and an understanding of the wider world. Our termly WOW events enthuse our students and give shape and purpose to learning. Our friendly mindset characters help us to develop a growth mindset so that children can develop resilience and are not afraid to make mistakes. We want to support our children so that they grow in Mind, Body and Spirit and be the very best that they can be.

Implementation-Our primary aims are:

• Provide a Christ centred, supportive, positive, healthy, caring and safe environment, which has high expectations and values all members of the school community.
• Recognise the needs and aspirations of all individuals and provide opportunities for all pupils to make the best possible progress and attain the highest achievements; to enable them to grow in mind, body and spirit.
• Ensure children develop lively, enquiring minds and become literate, numerate and technologically competent individuals, within a broad, balanced, exciting and challenging curriculum.
• Provide rich and varied contexts and experiences for pupils to acquire, develop and apply a broad range of knowledge, skills and understanding.
• Provide an ambitious curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, physical, mental and emotional development of the pupils.
• Promote positive behaviour, self-esteem, self-worth, emotional wellbeing, resilience and achievement through the use of our PSHE & C curriculum, in conjunction with our Growth Mindset ethos.
• Develop children’s confidence and capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively.

The impact of our curriculum

At St George’s Catholic Primary School, pupils are supported to develop interests, knowledge and understanding across all curriculum subjects. We put a great emphasis on English, Maths, RE, Computing and Sport. We have specialist teachers for French, Music and PE as well as an IT technician who supports with the teaching of computing.

We strive to ensure that our children leave St George’s Catholic Primary School with a broad knowledge base. What we teach is taken from the National Curriculum. All of the National Curriculum objectives are covered cohesively using either themes, cross-curricular links or discrete teaching. WOW events are used to enthuse students and generate excitement and focus for a particular subject. Educational visits and visitors coming into the school are key to a successful curriculum and to embed learning.

We teach our children subject specific skills to ensure that our children are learning how to become historians, geographers, scientists, musicians and artists of the future. Skills are used as a vehicle for developing subject knowledge. Maths and English skills are practised and reinforced whenever appropriate with a strong emphasis on reading across the whole school. It is expected that pupils will move through the curriculum for each year group at roughly the same pace, however, some pupils make take longer to grasp particular concepts and skills. We value depth of knowledge over rapid progression through objectives.
